Meet Maria Reed from Moving with the Military

Stylecraft Builders is excited to announce their collaboration with Maria Reed and Moving with the Military. The Reed Family are not only Stylecraft homeowners themselves, but also exemplify our mission of giving back to their community. As an active duty military spouse, Maria has taken her family’s experiences and with her skills, creativity, and big heart, she has created a vision for giving back at home:

My name is Maria Reed and I am the creator of Moving with the Military. Moving with the Military is a web-based, home improvement series that celebrates military families with surprise home makeovers. My husband Patrick and I have been married for 15 years, 13 of which he has been in the Army, so we know how special a home makeover can feel to a military family. I came up with the idea for the show about a year ago, just as my husband was gearing up to deploy. Crazy timing to embark on one of the toughest undertakings of my life, but that is how we military spouses roll; we just do it. I wanted to combine the two worlds I was passionate about; film making and design, and I also wanted to raise the morale of our military families and celebrate the amazing things they are doing.

I started my career as a television producer and director, but I set that aside when we had young children and my husband re-enlisted in the military. I wanted to be with my small children, so I became a teacher. I have taught film production, photography, computer science and yearbook. Although I love teaching, still I felt like there was something missing. I wanted to work on a project about empowering and celebrating military families, in particular, military spouses. Within 72 hours I wrote a business plan, created a website, and launched our social media networks. It came together so quickly, and I knew I was on to something special.

As we all know, life is often about timing. It just so happened that around this same time, we were also house hunting and we stepped into a Stylecraft model home for the first time. When I walked into the model home I thought this is so beautiful and perfect for my vision and our family. We can film in the house because the ceilings are tall, high enough for lighting, and the layout and design were simply crying out to be put on TV. After that initial visit, it didn’t take long for us to commit to building our Stylecraft home here in the Fort Hood area. Mind you, my husband was still gearing up to deploy soon thereafter. It would still be a few months before our house was complete, but I was able to film the entire process and share that content with our followers.

We filmed our first episode in the Fort Hood area in March of 2017 and were pleasantly surprised with how much the military and civilian communities appreciated what we were doing. Since then we have filmed four more episodes, from Fort Benning, Georgia to San Antonio, Texas. Currently, we are working on room makeovers for military kids during April, Month of the Military Child.

In addition to our makeover show, we also film a Facebook Live video every other Thursday right from our Stylecraft kitchen. Date Night DIY is a live show where we invite America into our kitchen to talk, hang out and build something. At the end of the show we give the item we made to someone who is watching We also share the plans and cut list on our blog for anyone who wants to try it on their own.

When you are in the military and a move is expected every couple of years, it can be hard to feel “at home” and lay down roots where you are living. We want our show to help people to know how to make a house feel like a home, even if that home may be temporary. I enjoy reinventing our home with each move, and when I unpack our household goods, it’s like going shopping all over again. Military life can be tough, but it is also an amazing adventure. Enjoy the journey!

Stay tuned for more information from Stylecraft Builders and Moving with the Military, as we will be sponsoring a bedroom makeover for a military child this month.
